The basic treatment for gonorrhea is through complete destruction of every trace of the bacteria that has intruded the body. At first, uncomplicated gonorrhea antibiotics are commonly used such as penicillin. Tetracycline, and sulfa drugs sometimes can also treat gonorrhea. Being the one of the most commonly reported sexually transmitted diseases, gonorhhea is not that easy to be treated anymore with this drug class.

In the early 1990s, fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and levofloxacin have been proven effective and convenient for the treatment of gonorrhea. However the bacterium capable of giving gonorrheal infection is prevalent thus requiring new treatment regimens.

That is why nowadays, cephalosporins like ceftriaxone and as well as spectinomycin are being prescribed by many doctors for patients with gonorrhea. Azithromycin has established better results also to those with non-complicated infections. Other alternative antibiotics for this simple gonococcal infection are also available. These include cefpodoxime and doxycycline which are being used. Specific treatment regimens are being prescribed by the doctor so there will be combination of intramuscular or oral treatment.

A gonorrhea antibiotic is the primary treatment for this infection. Antibiotics, if taken as prescribed by a doctor, easily treats gonorrhea infections. The effectiveness also relies with the compliance of the patient as well. Even if a gonorrhea antibiotic is being effective for the patient’s infection, the patient should still take full responsibility of compliance to medication and then following safer sexual contact.
